Textile care: Lyocell

Lyocell is a semi synthetic material and has a silky feel. It is sometimes used as a substitute for silk or cotton. It is made of cellulose fiber, usually from fast-growing wood species such as beech or pine. You might have heard of Tencel before as a reference to a type of fabric, also made out of cellulose fiber. Lyocell and Tencel are chemically speaking the same fabric however, the difference is that Tencel is a registered brand.

Viscose is also made out of cellulose fiber. The difference between lyocell and viscose is that lyocell is considered more sustainable due to the different chemicals used in the production process.

How to care for lyocell

Lyocell leads away moisture and breathes well which means that the build of bacteria is low and that you don't need to wash it so often. If you want to give it a refresh between washes, you may air or give it a steam. When it comes to caring for lyocell, the oils that the material is made out of mustn't dry out. It is therefore recommended to wash cold- max. 30 degrees and let it dry flat. It should not be hang- dried or tumble-dried.
