Designers must stay informed to remain relevant and contribute to creating a better future

Designing for impact beyond the screen: Championing digital sustainability
One of the most meaningful milestones in my career was introducing and championing digital sustainability as a core consideration in our design practice. While working at AFRY, I noticed that conversations around sustainability often focused on materials or branding—but rarely touched digital products. I saw an opportunity to bring a more holistic perspective to our work.
Together with a passionate team, I initiated internal talks, created workshops, and shared research on the environmental and ethical impact of digital design—from energy consumption to inclusive user flows. At first, these efforts were met with curiosity, but little urgency. Still, I stayed consistent and collaborative, tailoring the message to different stakeholders. Over time, this work became embedded in the studio’s official sustainability strategy, influencing both how we designed and how we talked about design with clients.
This experience reinforced my belief that great design isn’t just functional or beautiful—it’s responsible. And as designers, we have the power to shape not only user behavior, but industry culture. That’s the kind of impact I want to keep creating.
Planet friendly design choices
Sustainability is crucial as climate change increasingly impacts societies with frequent floods, droughts, and extreme heat. With stricter emissions laws and growing market demand for sustainable products, designers must stay informed to remain relevant and contribute to creating a better future.
With two colleagues, we developed a presentation on sustainable digital design strategies. It enabled our team to apply planet-friendly practices in daily work and sparked broader discussions about sustainability within the team.
We had the opportunity to hold a lecture for UX- design students at YRGO. As part of our preparation, we developed the material and designed a workshop aligned with the lecture topic.
Below you can see a selection of slides from the presentation and images from workshops.
