Microplastics In Our Clothes
Everytime we wash clothes made from synthetic materials they release microplastics. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that get through our water treatment plants and into the ocean, and then into our food and drinking water. It’s known that microplastics have been found in the drinking water and in the US it’s estimated that 94% of all tap water contains microplastics. Which is insane!
As we can’t filter the ocean we must stop putting plastics in it. Here are some things you can do concerning how you choose and take care of your clothes.
Wash your clothes less often and try air them instead after you’ve used them.
If you need a small refreshing of your clothes, try to spray them with some linen water. This is in my opinion a good option.
If you’re buying synthetic clothes, try to buy them second hand. The first four washes releases the most microplastics, so by purchasing a piece of clothing that has already been washed you’ll decrease the amount of microplastics released into the ocean compared with buying a new piece.
When you buy new clothes, try to opt for clothes made from natural fibers such as wool, cotton, hemp and linen.
