Books for the Spooky Season
Masters of Death - Olivie Blake
Imagine if all legends were true and all the creatures gathered in a book. However, this is mainly a story of humanity.
"This book is about an estate agent. Only she’s a vampire, the house on sale is haunted, and its ghost was murdered.
When Viola Marek hires Fox D’Mora to deal with a ghost-infested mansion, she expects a competent medium. But unbeknownst to Viola, Fox is not a medium at all. He’s a fraud – and the godson of Death.
As the mystery of the mansion unfolds, Viola and Fox are drawn into an unlikely quest that neither wants nor expects. They’ll need the help of a demonic personal trainer, a steadfast reaper, and an angel with her own secrets. It transpires that an inconvenient dead body and a lost love are intrinsically linked. Can this coalition of unwilling allies solve this conundrum and un-haunt a house – by winning a devious immortal game?"
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë
This is a book I've read and re-read so many times. I think that above all this is a story of finding your own independence.
"The story of orphaned Jane Eyre, who grows up in the home of her heartless aunt, enduring loneliness and cruelty. This troubled childhood strengthens Jane's natural independence and spirit - which prove necessary when she finds employment as a governess to the young ward of Byronic, brooding Mr Rochester. As her feelings for Rochester develop, Jane gradually uncovers Thornfield Hall's terrible secret, forcing her to make a choice. Should she stay with Rochester and live with the consequences, or follow her convictions - even if it means leaving the man she loves?"
Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier
This book is not dissimilar to Jane Eyre. I would say that not a lot happens in this book until everything happens all at once.
“The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives--presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave. “
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches - Sangu Mandanna
If you rather snuggle up with a heartwarming story then this is the book for you.
“Mika Moon follows three rules: hide your magic, keep your head down, and stay away from other witches. Mika is good at being alone, and she doesn't mind it . . . mostly. But when an unexpected invitation arrives to teach three young witches at the mysterious Nowhere House, Mika jumps at the chance for a different life. As she comes to care for its quirky inhabitants - and Jamie, the handsome but prickly librarian - finally belonging somewhere feels like a real possibility. But magic isn't the only danger in the world - is it worth risking everything to protect the found family Mika didn't know she was looking for? A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a new family - and a new love - changes the course of her life.”
